Honest Evaporative Cooling Advice From a Crew That Works These Streets
We are a local, family-owned business, ten years operating, and we give it to you straight. Evaporative runs cheap in dry conditions and struggles on a muggy day, and we will tell you which one your house suits before you spend a cent.
Checklist
How Evaporative Cooling Actually Works
An evaporative unit sits on the roof and pulls outside air through water-soaked pads. The air cools as it passes through, then flows through ducts into every room of the house.
That is the whole trick, and it is why the system behaves differently to a reverse-cycle one:
- It needs windows or vents open while it runs, because air has to move through the house and out again
- It uses water as well as power, so a summer bill arrives from both SA Water and your energy retailer
- It delivers fresh outside air rather than recirculating the same air all day
None of that is a downside if you know it up front. It is just a different machine doing a different job.

Which Edwardstown Homes Suit It
The housing decides this more than anything. The solid-brick and stone bungalows on their modest blocks, built from the 1919 subdivisions onward, have the roof line and ceiling height an evaporative unit needs.
The classic fit. Detached houses and semis on the leafier streets near Woodlands Park Railway Station, where owners want whole-house cooling without a whole-house power bill.
The poor fit. The flats and infill are a different story, and we say so plainly rather than sell the wrong machine:
- The 1970s and 80s walk-up flats and townhouse infill closer to South Road raise strata, roof access and shared-wall questions
- Those homes usually land better with a split system
- One system for both seasons is not on the table, because evaporative cools only, so reverse cycle or a ducted gas pairing is the honest answer for winter

Cooling Costs Through an Adelaide Summer
Dry heat is where evaporative earns its keep. Adelaide summers rarely carry the humidity that kills these systems, so on a run of 40-degree days an evaporative unit keeps working while the power draw stays low.
The saving. A whole-house reverse-cycle system running hard through a heatwave is expensive; the same house on evaporative costs a fraction of it to run. That matters for the long-term owner-occupiers and renters across the suburb's mixed housing.
The catch. The handful of humid days each summer. On those days the pads cannot cool the air much, and the system is mostly a fan. Households who accept that trade get the cheap running costs; households who cannot should look at reverse cycle instead.
There is also seasonal servicing to budget for, which other systems do not need in the same way:
- Pads checked and replaced when they mineral up
- Water feed and float valve tested
- Bleed-off rate set so the water does not go stale
- A pre-summer start-up so the unit is ready before the first hot spell
Our cleaning service covers all of it each spring.
How it works
What the Install Involves
Every evaporative job starts on the roof. We check the roof line, the ceiling depth and the duct paths, because the older bungalows vary in pitch and the runs have to clear beams and existing services.
From there the job runs in a clear order:
- 01
Step 1
Roof inspection and unit placement, keeping the unit clear of the chimney and prevailing dust
- 02
Step 2
Duct runs and ceiling outlets planned room by room
- 03
Step 3
Water feed connected and drain lines set to the right fall
- 04
Step 4
Commissioning with the windows-open airflow tested and a full handover on the controls
Most installs in the single-storey homes here are done in a couple of days. If you are replacing an old unit, the changeover is quicker still, and our replacement service quotes the whole job fixed before we start.
You get the price in writing before any work begins. That is our Fixed Upfront Pricing, and it means no hourly rates and no bill shock.
Common problems
Common Evaporative Problems We Fix
Most evaporative faults trace back to water or airflow, and most are fixable without a new unit:
Weak airflow
Musty smell
Water overflow
No cooling on humid days
If the smell has you worried, our page on air conditioner smells runs through the causes in more detail.

Evaporative Cooling FAQs
Do I really need to leave windows open?
Yes, and it is the most common thing people get wrong. The system pushes air through the house and out again, so a few windows or vents cracked open is how it works at its best.
Is evaporative cheap to run?
It usually is in dry conditions, because the only major power draw is the fan rather than a compressor, though the water usage adds a smaller SA Water cost each summer.
Will it cope on humid days?
It will struggle, and we will not pretend otherwise. Adelaide gets a handful of humid days each summer, and on those the unit works mostly as a fan rather than a cooler.
Can you service an old evaporative unit?
We can, and older units benefit most, with pads, water feeds and bleed-off checked each spring so the system is ready before the first hot spell arrives.
What about winter warmth?
Evaporative cannot provide it, and any installer who says otherwise is selling you the wrong thing. For the cold months we size a reverse-cycle or ducted gas setup alongside it.
